Raise Your Goblet of Rock

We saw School of Rock last night. It's a really fun movie. Jack Black has so much energy and insanity and passion for rock, I found myself cracking up to all the sort of rock and roll in-jokes, the same way that This Is Spinal Tap made me. You can see exactly where the plot is going, but School of Rock overcomes that as Black tries desperately to impart to the kids the importance of the history of rock, and simply how important it is for them to rock. The kids are enjoyable and funny in their own way, but ultimately do a great job of playing straight man to Black's manic rock enthusiasm.

Anyone who has a deep appreciation of rock music, or who has struggled in a band unable to find success, or who can instantly recognize Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song", AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top", or the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner", or can appreciate references to Neil Peart, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Pete Townshend's "windmill" guitar stance, Aretha Franklin, and the Ramones, will find themselves smiling, laughing, and tapping their feet to this very funny movie. And those who aren't so lucky to have been born into a love of rock seem to enjoy this movie's sheer comedic fun.
