Installing the Pioneer DEH-P6800MP iPod-Connected Head Unit in a Boxster
by Trygve Isaacson, copyright c2006
There are numerous ways to play your iPod on your car stereo. But to get good sound quality you must use a direct audio connection; an FM transmitter or modulator simply will not do. For some stock head units you can get an auxiliary-in signal, or even use the CD changer's audio inputs as I discussed in an earlier article. However, you may consider going to final step and installing a new head unit that is designed to connect to the iPod directly. For me, the impetus for doing so was when my CD changer finally stopped working, and thus thwarted my use of the CD changer input hack. So I went ahead and installed a Pioneer DEH-P6800MP.
Types of iPod Integration
To date I've seen several types of iPod integration in radio head units.
The most basic type allows the head unit to navigate the iPod's playlists as if they are CDs in a CD changer.
